In an effort to foster awareness about the global phenomenon, the Association of Islamic Students Alumni (Kahmi) hosted a one-day educational seminar on climate change that was attended by about 200 of its members Thursday.
The participants were obliged to communicate their knowledge on climate change to at least five groups of communities over the next year.
“You are the agents for change to improve the environment. Climate change is very real and has caused unpredictable weather patterns in Indonesia,” Kahmi chairman Abidinsyah Siregar told the participants.
Abidinsyah, who is a medical doctor, said the spread of diseases was greatly influenced by climate change.
“The endemic of malaria now is hitting almost all provinces in the country. Temperature increases are quickening the spread of the disease,” he said.
The one-day training seminar was organized jointly by Kahmi, the National Council on Climate Change and Climate Project Indonesia and provided by four TCPI presenters – Armi Susandi, Nana Fitrian Firman, Fachruddin Majeri Mangunjaya and Dicky Edwin Hindarto.
“We need to change our behavior and lifestyles to tackle climate change,” said Armi, who is a lecturer at the Bandung Technology of Institute.
